Task Checklist

When the agent takes on work with several steps, it lays out a plan and keeps it up to date in a single checklist card in the chat. You can see at a glance what's done, what it's doing now, and what comes next, without reading every tool call.

It works with every model: Claude Code, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter, and local models. And when you switch models halfway through, the new one carries on with the steps that are left.

The Card

  • The header shows Tasks, what the agent is working on right now (or what's next), and a progress bar with a count such as (3 of 7 done). When everything is finished it reads All 7 tasks complete.
  • The steps are grouped into Done, In progress, and Up next.
  • With Claude Code, each step is numbered, hovering a step shows its full description, and a step that can't start until another is finished shows which one it's waiting for (after #3).
  • Folding: once five or more steps are done and work remains, the Done group folds so the open steps stay in view. Click its label to open it. The whole card collapses from its header.

The card updates in place as the agent works and moves down to stay next to the latest progress. One card per plan per turn: a new plan opens a new card and collapses the earlier ones, and a finished plan's card is never changed afterwards, so the chat keeps an honest record of each plan.

Reopened sessions redraw every checklist exactly as it was.

Asking for a Checklist

Most models make a checklist on their own for work with several steps, and skip it for a quick question. To make sure you get one, just ask:

Keep a checklist while you work on this
Plan the migration as a checklist first, then start

Every Model, One Card

ModelHow it keeps the list
Claude CodeIts own task tools, which TatsuCode draws as the checklist card
OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter, local modelsTatsuCode's Update Plan tool, which draws the same card

Switching models mid-plan

The checklist isn't tied to the model that started it:

  • From Claude Code to another model: the new model sees the open list and continues it, marking off the remaining steps.
  • From another model to Claude Code: Claude Code takes over the steps that are left as its own tasks and finishes them.

Only an unfinished list carries over. Once a plan is done, the next model starts fresh.
